1st Place: “Wii Care” – “…a Wii console add-on that helps elderly and retired people stay connected and active in their communities.” by Jerome Tave, Connor McGlauflin, Matt Morgan, Nick Difeliciantonio, Darby Thomas
“This project probes the possibilities found in the Wii-elderly interaction. The problem statement points out the pertinent issue of the loss of connectivity within in a otherwise hyper-connected society. I enjoyed the thorough exploration and depth in this solution. Very solid presentation, great sketches.” – Collin Farill, Big Bang
I had a great time working on this project. Nice job guys!

As we all know, packaging is everywhere. Everywhere we look, packaging holds the things we want, and the things we need. It is great to see that quality products put more effort into their packaging, making them stand out from others. People that put time and thought in their products show concern for the consumer and the overall experience designed for them. Being a fan of great looking packaging, and having designed some packaging myself, I understand the effects the design has on purchasing power, brand image, identity, and quality.
However, recently, sustainability and recyclability is becoming more and more apparent in all types of packaging. Many things are made of recycled paper, recycled plastics, post-consumer waste, and other things that have less of an impact on the environment. However, at the grocery store for example, if i buy a drink and a sandwich, I do not want/need a bag (even if it is made of recycled paper). One thing I have been noticing is that since the packaging is already recycled people think it is alright to overuse it and even worse, not recycle it again. It is the designer’s responsibility when designing sustainable and ecological packaging, to not only make wise material selections but also make intelligent use of the materials in the design.
That being said, hope you enjoy these awesome projects.
Check out this Flip Mino that I just created with a few custom graphics. Their image upload and positioning online works great. The interface lends itself very well to customization and does not hinder one’s creativity. I would say that this interface gets it as clos e as you can get to a fully customizable design. They also have some pattern generators if you are short of ideas.
I designed this Flip Mino taking ideas from my online customization project (logo, overall aesthetic) that i did for my Human-computer interaction class.
Seems like a great tool to support ethnographic research, and recording data for contextual research… Will have to look into it some more. In the meantime, click the l ink to see some other views!!
thinkpublic : co-design process

Just came accross this great video explaining the process of co-design. When designing public services, this method seems really effective since it involves the beneficiaries of the design in the process, giving them a sense of empowerment belonging to the particular solution.
Great scenario, very clear explanation… Can’t wait for my next opportunity to use this design method.

For many of us, table football is a game that is close to our hearts, holding cherished memories of our childhood and youth. Its popularity also reflects the passion and love that millions of people around the world share for ‘the beautiful game’ of football.
This is a time lapse video I put together after the 24 hour design charrette sponsored by IDSA Atlanta. The entire 24 hours are not represented but a pretty significant portion of it is. Team Elliance: great job on a great project!!
